Hiking to the Chalaadi Glacier (optional);
The Chalaadi Glacier, located at an elevation of 1,850 meters above sea level, is a remarkable natural wonder in the Svaneti region. Fed by four streams, it is the only glacier in the area that cuts through the dense forest, descending to an impressive height of 1,960 meters. Situated just 15 kilometers from Mestia, the glacier is accessible by off-road vehicle for the first 12 kilometers, after which a 3-kilometer hike leads to the glacier’s edge. The hiking trail begins at 1,670 meters above sea level and ascends to 1,950 meters. The first two kilometers of the trail take you through a serene forest, while the final kilometer traverses rocky terrain. The hike is relatively easy, making it suitable for most visitors. In total, those starting from the trailhead will cover 6 kilometers round-trip. While the glacier is a breathtaking sight, visitors must exercise caution. Due to the potential for ice breaking off and frequent rockfalls, it is essential to keep a safe distance from the glacier. It is also advised not to hike during rainy or foggy conditions to ensure your safety while enjoying this stunning natural landscape.
