Visit Petra Fortress;
Imagine a city carved into a remote and rugged coastline, where towering cliffs meet the vast expanse of the sea. This was Petra, a strategic outpost in the Eastern Roman Empire during the 6th century—a place of both military might and economic control. Yet, the story of Petra begins long before its role in the famed Lazic War (541-562 CE), where it became a battleground between the Romans and their fierce rivals, the Sasanian Persians of Iran. The very name “Petra,” meaning “rock” in Greek, reflects the essence of the city’s geography. Nestled between towering cliffs and the sea, Petra was virtually inaccessible except for a narrow, rocky strip of land. Founded, according to Greek historians, by the Roman official John Tzibus, Petra wasn’t just a military stronghold. It was also an economic hub, where Romans exerted tight control over imports, ensuring access to luxury goods among them salt, highly prized commodity. But like many cities of its time, Petra’s prominence began to fade in the Middle Ages. Today, though reduced to ruins, Petra still offers a glimpse into its former glory. As you walk among the ancient stones, you can almost feel the pulse of its past—the echoes of merchants, soldiers, and rulers who once shaped this vital city of antiquity.
